I was talking to a friend that day when he happened to tell me about an incident in the training his CEO was taking.

The CEO asked the all the people pointing towards his shoes

“How much do you think these shoes are worth?”

They looked to be classy shoes. Everyone started guessing. 2000, 5000, 7000 etc .

The CEO smiled and said “Heah ! 300 Kei hai” ( They are worth 300 ) .

Now people were guessing High figures because it was their CEO and supposedly would wear costly shoes.

The first thing here is he could pull of a ordinary shoes and make them look cool with his personality. Your personality has a deeper impact on things around you that things around you have on your personality . ( Though the other way also has an impact )

Also he is the CEO and still wears ordinary shoes .

Or as he wears ordinary shoes lead him to his way up to the CEO designation ??

What is more Important than How.

Whenever we try to do something specifically new the first question which comes to mind is How do we that. And we think answering this is the most important thing to solve any problem we have .

But I have released that How is not the Important question .

Once we come to the question of How we Generally in most cases find the answer sooner or later .

The main question is What to do . This is what is difficult to answer .

The question of how to do becomes too important to us because till we are in college or even later What is generally defined may be by school or college or other people .

They say this is to be done . And we just try to figure out How .

So we come to the conclusion that How to do a thing ( anything ) is the most important question and if we can answer that we are through .

But later as you take more control of your life the most important question become What .

How just follows .

The above thing is structured a bit oddly or confusing as I was just thinking what to write rather than how to write :).

Software project development teaches life

I was talking about something that was very difficult for me to complete to one of my close friends where I think he came up with a beautiful line .

He said that like a software project which has to go live ,will go live irrespective of any numbers of bugs the only thing is we have to fix them .

In life when we decide something to do , it might be hard and lot of bugs might be there but if we decide it has to go live ( has to be done ) then rather than concentrating our efforts on thinking whether we have to do it or know we start concentrating our effort on how to fix those .

Also those bugs ( problems ) are going to crop up , irrespective of how good one is , and we have to fix those . Even realizing that problems will crop up help us in not wasting time & energy on crying on problems have come up and concentrate on how from now we can fix them and finish the thing we started .

By far it does not mean that we make mistakes purposely , but its good to realize that if we pick up something difficult we are bound to have some problems .

Also as a software gets old it starts having lesser bugs .

Infact if we did not have problems doing something that means we have gone very good at what we are doing it long enough to master it and its we might be not growing too much .

In summary like software projects in life

Like a software project which has to be done if we have to do something just do it and keep fixing as problems come up.
As a software gets older , same way as we get experienced in doing something we start getting lesser problems .

So we learnt a lot in engineering about Software development and also life :)

Hey,

The ease of attempting again can make one complacent.

When we know that we have only one shot at a thing and we have to do it now or never there is a different level of seriousness to it.

But when we have a lot of chances on some thing, and those chances are easily obtain we tend to take that particular thing easy.

So many times when we have a very tough task to do but only one chance there are good chances we might finish it.

But an easy task which at the back of the mind we know it’s not do or die makes us complacent.

We all get complacent at some time about something that’s easy or not do or die . Also when things go dead serious we might be able to pull out things that we did not think we could .

The point I wanted to stress is becoming complacent about an easy thing is that it could become serious and do or die . Or it might happen that we might never finish the task .

So don’t fall in the complacency trap . I will surely try not to J

Also if you have any situations where you have gone complacent about ( If not - wow ;)

) or pulled out completely unthinkable according to you when it was do or die please share it .

Activity & Progress.

Hey,

We many time knowingly or unknowingly interchange the term activity and progress and think that’s one and the same. We do a lot pf activity and think we are leading to progress. And if a lot of activity is not happening that means progress is on hold.

Lets just define the terms

Activity – Is doing something.

Progress – is gaining something which is beneficial and mostly measurable.

For e.g. Studying 10 hours a day is activity. Getting a first class and passing is progress.

Activity may lead to progress but not necessarily.

This being a very general e.g:- one can easily differentiate activity and progress. But as we get into more specific work generally we have a tough time differentiating the two and mistake one for another (and generally we mistake activity for progress).

The second reason is that activity is in our hand whereas progress depends on factors outside which one can influence but cannot totally control. So we prefer measuring activity .

But Pareto’s principle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle) applies here that 20% of our activity brings 80% of the progress and rest 80% of activity brings the rest 20% progress.

So the most important point is to decide which is the 20% activity which brings about the 80 % progress.

I try to increase that 20% deciding intuitively which is the 20% ( or call it experience J ) or I try to increase the 100% of activity which in turn increase the productive 20% activity which increases progress .

How do you all decide what activities to perform and what not to ?

The Honey Moon Effect

I read about a nice concept called the HoneyMoon effect . It just happened that a lot of my friends are getting married at this time and I accidentally came across this concept.

Don’t get scandalized this is nothing do with what you all are thinking only the name might sound a little controversial :) .

Actually the concept is that when we learn a new thing by attending a training , meeting some new person very good in the field we are totally charged up and enthu about applying these things . But as a day or two passes by we get caught up with daily urgent work and forget to apply what we learnt. So the new knowledge which could improve us goes waste as we forget to incorporate it in our ways of doing things.

This happens a lot when I meet some top person in their field and he gives some talk .

I am totally charged up that time. But at times the energy drains out after a few days.

Does this happen to you all ?

I liked this stuff party because of the concept party because the apt name given to it . the honey moon effect :)

Sucess is not directly propotional to Talent

Hey,

Talent ( or in generally ability to do some specific thing ) does not really take you forward in life .So there is no direct correlation between talent and the rate and distance you move forward in life .

But though no direct correlation there is a relation between them .

So there has to be some parameter in between which depends on talent . And success would depend on that parameter .

That parameter is choices .

A person gets choices which are dependent on how talented he is .

For e.g. say a person is good at studies and get 90% in 10^th . He gets choices that he can take Science, commerce or arts and can also choose out of a number of good colleges.

But say if he got 40 % he might have to take only arts .

Choices got cut down.

Now suppose he makes a wrong choice and takes up say science which he was not interested with the same talent as he would get bored he might not get far.

After you start work with you specific talent to make the next choice then again the cycle continues in the same way.

Stating it as a mathematically formula ( I am a little biased towards maths J )

Success α Correct Choices made

So more the talent more choices you get and more the correct choices you make the successful you will get.

Similarly making a wrong choice would hammer your growth provided your talent is the same.

Hence choices becoming an amplifying or retarding factor in between your talent and success.

Hence a person with less talent can achieve more by amplifying it by making correct choices .

And a very talented person can retard his growth by making wrong choices.

So talent just provides more choice and correct choices provides success .

But also more talent helps you to hold more wrong choices also .

Teacher And Mentor

I personally liked the all my teachers in college a lot. With all due respect though whoever is been in engineering college (or for that matter I believe in any college) knows that the teachers are not totally competent in the subjects they are teaching.

When I was teaching in my third year I was teaching better than the teachers teaching in college .

I am not boasting. To support my argument here are the reasons

· My students told me that

· They paid money to learn from me.

· They recommended me to their juniors and siblings.

The major difference in the approach of teaching was that I was not teaching them , but mentoring them.

What I mean is that I was not teaching them what ideally should be taught but what I did practically for myself in that subject.

Like in the exam if you forget how to pass pointers to function you define them globally .

Which I ideally should not recommend but practically if you can make the program work in the exam even this way you pass . So an important trick to know .

What I want to stress is that mentors give better advice than teachers.

The difference between mentors and teachers is that mentors have done it ( preferably successfully) before and teacher is someone who knows about it but might not have done it before.

Mentors have done it themselves so they know minute details of things which helps them to convey practical details which work in that situation.

So next time someone tells you something know whether he is mentoring you or just teaching you.

Hey I was reading Murphy’s three laws. I thought these would be interesting to you also as they are very general and we feel them always but having them stated as laws crystallizes them in our mind. They are all self explanatory but I would state e.g. of them.

Do add on with e.g. from your life also J

Law1 -Nothing is as easy as it seems

We had taken up a contract project as freelance developers in third year . It was a glass cutting optimization software ;). We thought we were damn cool and after listening the requirements we thought we could figure it out easily. We spent considerable amount of time on it and Bang we coded it, and went to show it

Now that customer says nope this is not like what he wanted. He said do this, I want this and this also would be nice . We almost told them F*** offJ.

Learnt we knew only to code and nothing not other parts of SDLC ;)

But I also believe that nothing is as hard as it seems

( Though one of my friend would be shouting right now he is an extremist and sees thing only in black and white J J)

Law 2-Everything will take longer than you think it will

The first thing coming to my mind is B.E. project. I am an over optimistic guy when its comes to scheduling of work (I have gone much better now). We had a super optimistic schedule for our B.E. project. And all (Me my project partners had agreed in flash of a second J ) .

The first release which was scheduled to finish in one month took three months ;).

But we completed the project and passed B.E. successfully. Yeah J

Law 3-Anything that can go wrong will go wrong

This is one of a recent one .This law fits for all the performances I do .There a dance competition I had taken part which was a couple dance completion. Flat I have an argument with my dance partner ;) and we are about to quit before performing.

We go and perform in that my pant does not have loops so cant wear a belt and my pant is loose . Yup obviously during the performance it starts falling down . Oooops .

Crowd laughing. To add to the fun of the crowd we had a prop as a car .

I land up holding the car the wrong side , so its like I am driving the from outside the car ;) . Crowd has a laugh of their time.

Yup when things go wrong they do go wrong J

Richness or poverty is a state of mind

Richness or poverty is a state of mind rather than connected to actual amount of money.

As a kid when we have Rs.100 in our hand we feel so rich that all chocolates we wanted or we could eat in a week can be bought right now .

In college Rs. 1000 for some mini project you did for someone made you feel so rich that you feel you will buy the world J.

The first pay check where you cross Rs. 10,000 . Wow . I don’t even know how to count that much ;)

Now you have one lakh . You don’t even know how many zero so you always write in words rather than figure ;).

You go and check out a car . Rs.4 Lakhs . Hmm you feel not rich enough .

A year or two save money .

Savings reach Rs. 3.5 lakhs . Yepiee car now . Wait a house is more imp.

House cost are Rs. 25 lakhs .

Only if I was richer .

10,000 made you feel king of the world , 3.5 lakhs makes you wish you were richer J

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

We call that people are lucky. They get things at the right time.

Or they are there in the right place at the right time.

If you see that there are a lot of people in the same place at the same time

with these so called lucky people. But they don’t cease the opportunity as well as these do.

Why?

Because it’s not being at the right time at the right place.

But being the right person at the right time at the right place.

Being the right person takes preparation. It may take a long time to get prepared.

And the more you prepare more and more places become right places and more and more times become right times.

And that’s why it said the harder I work the luckier I get.

Life like Share market

The share market goes down because of some trend.

As soon as it goes down if you have shares inexperience and amateur start selling as they go in loss.

Professional traders start buying.

They know what’s gone down will come up and it’s a good deal now.

They have the confidence and sense and experience to buy against the crowd and hold it till it goes up.

Things go wrong and down with people.

As soon as it goes down if you have shares inexperience and amateur start reducing their efforts (selling) as they go in loss.

Professional people (traders) start working more(buying).

They know what’s gone down will come up and it’s a good deal now.

They have the confidence and sense and experience to work more(buy )against the crowd and hold it till it goes up.

Hey ,

Day before I saw Tarre Zammen Par for the second time.

It a beautiful movie and everyone must watch.

It about how parents fail to exactly understand a child ( His qualities and lacking things ) and pressurize him to compete with the crowd ( The rat race )

On similar notes when we grow up it does not change much.

The only thing changes is the parents don’t pressurize us,

We split up in two different roles (The pressurizing parent and the suppressed and

Misunderstood child).

We set goals for ourselves not because we want to achieve them because others around us are achieving them.

And we think we also need to otherwise we are not capable enough.

But as the movie says every child is special so are we .

Special and different from others.

If one has found that specialty in oneself great, if not keep looking till you find.

We should not judge ourselves based on others expectations of us or others achievements.

We should judge ourselves based on our expectation and our previous achievements .

Knowledge, Skill and Attitude

Hey,

I use to always jumble between meanings of knowledge, skill and attitude till

I heard some very apt definitions of each.

Knowledge is the information of how to do a thing.

Skill is the ability to do a thing.

Attitude is the willingness or unwillingness to do a thing.

Like I might know how should tackle the ball in football, but might not have the ability to do it.

I might have a lot of strength to become a wrester (ability) but not the knowledge

of how to use the strength to become a wrestler .

I might have the knowledge how to code and the ability to code also but might not want

(Attitude) to do it.

All three are required to do a job well.

Difference in Coding at student and professional life

In college we used to code. We still code today.

But there is a huge difference in the process behind it .

This I believe requires a different view to the work we do.

In college the focus or the emphasis is on the work ( say Coding ) has to be done by you .

Now and now onwards (mostly) the focus is that the work has to be done.

What I mean is in college the assignments have to be done by you .

Exams are given by you and marks have to be scored by you .

But now the work just has to be done, not necessarily by you .

You might be responsible for a piece of work. That is the work is completed or no is you responsibility but not necessarily done by you.

It can be done by you , by you sub – ordinate , by your colleague, by your senior or by your friend .

Infact you are more appreciated if you are capable of getting work out of other people than doing it well yourself.

In college you can survive working in isolation. What I mean I can do my work like finish my assignments, my studies, give my exams. I don’t have to depend on others

to finish my work and do well.

But now I can’t work in isolation. I have to depend on other people to finish their work so that I can start mine if there is dependency.

So I can do everything correct but end up on the wrong side if someone else did do his work in the correct manner. And same could happen to other.

We get a glimpse of these things when we do a project at college level with other people .

But there we atleast have an option of people who we will work with.

Now we might not even have that.

These are the changes in the way we look at work which are required after college .

In a team first you need to give priority the team Goals( or objective ) , then your team members and then you .

When they ask him what he was doing these year he says he was preparing for this. This shows that belief combined with persistence is the ulimate input to do the unthinkable

It takes character ( as kabir khan says niyat ) to make a team not talent .
The world is with you when you succeed but you are all alone if you fail.

Your life might get screwed without your fault .

Everyone knows its human to miss a goal but Kabir khan life is screwed as he just misses a goal .

Its more important than how talented you are that you make a team storger than what it is . ( The ex captain is talented but because of her politics she weakens the team )
It is difficult situations in which mostly bonds are made in people .

The team first time gets together in the fight with the boys .

Character is more important than talent .

Data Information Knowledge Intelligence

Hey,

We being engineers ( Computer or IT ) we have heard the terms data , information , knowledge , intelligence . What are they and how they differ .

During my MIS paper heard the terms again . That time remembered this .

Say taking a simple example

Suppose we have a Picture of a rose in BMP format .

Those being in raw bits stored on some disk is data.

Knowing you have the bits with you ,you know you have data with you .

Knowing those bits are a BMP file and what software to use to see it is information.

Seeing the picture and knowing is it beautiful is knowledge .

Giving a flower or atleast the picture when you Girl Friend is angry is intelligence ;)

Getting something is getting data . That’s the first step.

Knowing how to read the data means is information.

Understanding the information is knowledge .

Using knowledge to do something is intelligence .

Understanding the difference is common sense J

Is Success or Failure important

Hey,

I read two statements

Success or failure is not important , trying is .

Either you do or you don’t there is nothing as try.

There are so contradicting.

The first one sounds more optimistic and theoretically is perfect.

But finally what matters are results.

If you have the results it does not matter how hard you tried to get them or

you got it easily .

If you don’t have the results mostly people don’t care how hard you tried.

As results can be measured tries cannot .

Now you would say those who try get results.

True .

But the biggest pain is trying hard and failing. Isn’t it .

It kills your confidence. Belief in yourself dies.

You start to question your abilities.

The biggest pain is failing because you did not try .

You could have achieved only you had given it a shot .

But you did not.

Can We lie to ourselves

Hey ,

This was one of the things I wanted to write from months actually now.

Even when we lie we know the truth .

This is a lie .

Because there are times when we lie to ourselves also .

Can we lie to ourselves?

I think we can and most of us do also.

There are times when we fail at something then we try to find all the reasons

which were not in our control which happened and blamed our failure on that .

For e.g in Engg exams – the questions came out of portion .

That chapter was never asked , this was the first time .

That teacher does not like me so I get bad term work .

So on……..

We all must have done this .

Why do we do it is failure makes us uneasy .

When we shift the responsibility of the failure from our self to something or somebody else we are no longer responsible for the failure.

This is one place.

We can or do lie to ourselves in many other places also.

It takes strength and character to accept responsibility of failures.

Don’t get me wrong here there are many failures which are not really under our control ,

And we should not be harsh on ourselves by blaming ourselves for that .

What I am saying is we have to be true to our self .

When its our mistake don’t blame it onto other people or things .

When its not our mistake don’t be harsh to yourself .

The problem actually is most of the people fall in one of the category

either too harsh on themselves or blaming others for every bad thing around .

So we should not lie at least not to ourselves . J

I was just thinking and found an analogy, between work and one sided love.

Work is or should be treated as one sided love.

In one sided love you give as much as you can, knowing you might not get anything back

But you give because you love. Irrespective of you get or no.

You fear that the other person might love you or know ever, but still have a hope that he will.

But you still love to do nice things to the other person irrespective of anything.

The other person might behave unreasonable , not be with you when you require .

But you always behave well to him , and be there when he needs you . Because you love him.

Same goes for your work.

It might not give you what you expect from it ,

But give it what it needs because you love it .

Remember love your work . Very true .

But remember your work might not always be in love with you .

Don’t get it wrong.

Lazy as in they don’t like to do things as they are done and want to do it in a faster, easier and efficient way.

As they are lazy they have a Necessity of doing things in a different way

Lets me begin with defining two terms as I perceive it to be

Potential – It is the ability perceived in a person to achieve something. Whether he/she will achieve it is a question.

Achievement – It something done or got by a person (whether he had the potential to get or do that is a different thing).

Whats more important.

Potential or Achievement .

Potential could be an Achievement in the future .

But I read a statement some where it said – There is nothing more common in the world than talented failures.

Achievement is something which is done in the past. It’s done.

But one successful thing does not lead to other .

There is nothing faster forgotten than a good achievement .

Failures are more remembered than success . Cricketers being the best e .g .

One bad performance and done .

So what important Potential or Achievements .

Don’t tell me Potetial which leads to Achievement which Obviously is the Best .

You did not have the complete information to solve the problem then we make assumption based on previous experiences which might be bad sometimes .
I was making the rules of this game. So it I can change the rules according to my convenience to make sure I win . In life we have to play games in which the rules are in favor of others and also they might change to favor others , similarly we try to make rules favorable to us .

Experience is the only teacher.

One of the very famous and very true saying is

“Experience is the only teacher.”

This is very true, but many times not understood properly.

When you read this is comes to mind that when you experience something , you learn from it . This is true but not complete.

No where the saying says the experience has to be only yours . It could be of others .

You can learn not only from your experiences but also others .

People who fail to learn from their experiences turn out to be failures .

People who learn from their experiences turn out to be success but they take long time to achieve it .

People who learn from their experiences and others grow very fast .

So keep learning from all the experiences of everyone.

Physics law drive Human Behaviour also

I was just speaking to a friend that day about connection between Physics laws and those laws applying to human behavior.

Newtons law - Inertia – Resistance to change .

Goes same for humans , we have high resistance to change .

Einsteins – Theory of relativity.

Even we judge everything on the basis of who and where we are .

Darwins Theory – Survival of the fittest.

How true is that for humans .

Ohms law . ( not sure it comes in ohms law but there is a law which says current always takes the path of minimum resistance ).

Humans take the path of minimum pain.

Hmmmm interesting.

Change or Not to Change

Two things which differentiate humans from other living things are

Humans change the surroundings according to their needs.
Humans built tools to do things.

These two things are very important.

But in accordance to the first point in surroundings we include other people also.

We want people around us to be like how we want them to be.

Similarly people around us want us to change.

But as people we resist change. And so do them. J So it’s the chicken and egg problem.

And what happens is there are some qualities which are so obvious to us that people should have because we have learnt that behavior from years and now. So it’s very obvious to us that the other person should have a particular behavior trait. But as the other person is brought up differently and gone through different experiences has different behavior traits.

So if you feel that some person around you is doing something wrong try to tell him that he is doing wrong.

Don’t tell him to change. Make him realize he has to change.

Because both might be right in their places.

Similarly when somebody tells you to change think of it with an open mind and see if a change is really necessary.

And only if you feel it is necessary change.

Because the person telling you might have a different perspective of things which might right or wrong for you.

Goals - Hit on them

Can you shoot a target you cannot see . Not unless you are as great as arjun(mahabharat).

I don’t think we normal people can shoot the target you cannot see.

Can you built software without knowing the requirements.

Even a five year will anwer these questions . These sound like obvious facts .

But when it come to us the same facts seem so blur.

We don’t know what is our goal .

A goal is something which can be measured in quantity and in time .

I heard people saying they have goals like

I want to own a company.
I want to help others
I want to be successful in my career

Are these goals . Nope they are wishes .

Your Wishes should drive your goals .

Goals for the above e.g could be

In two years (by jan 2009) I will have Product X which my company will be selling and I will have 10 employees under me with a turn over of Y.
I will teach 3 students maths who are poor by the end of 2007.
I will make sure that I have become TG2 in next 3 yrs (by jan 2010) .

These are some long term (or medium duration goals set for the wishes we have).

Now you should set goals for the current year , current month, current week, current day such that you can measure them .

Goals have to be realistic in the sense the should not be over or under ambitious .

How to set such goals ? Know yourself . and with experience and evaluating whether you could complete your previous goals or no you learn and set goals appropriately.

Write down Goals on paper. This helps in laying stress on it .

Read you long term goals everyday. This helps us focus.

I am very bad at goal settings . But will improve .

Whenever something is going wrong in life you just need to learn a new skill .

So simple yet so difficult.

Free Or Fair

Most of us in life sometime would have said that life not fair.

This is true, life is not fair, it is free.

But do we really want it to be fair.

If it was fair everyone would be doing the same thing, same work.

If it was fair we all would start from the same level in everything .

So for E.g –

Even if one person is born blind all of us should be blind if we have to be totally fair.

Everything given to us could not be decided by us because to be fair it has to be same for all.

So its good that life is not fair . It is free .

We can choose .

So we only want life to be fair when we are on receiving end .

I have only seen people crib in practical exams when they get a tough program then others , and people call themselves lucky when they get a easy one , but that time no one speaks about being fair .

That’s how human nature is .

So we want life to be free when its good to us and fair to be bad to us .

Which does not happen as life is free and not fair .

And good its not fair .

Emotion are not Good or Bad

We generally have some preconceived notions about some emotions .

In the sense that we consider some as bad and some as good.

For E.g :-

Anger, greed , fear are considered to be bad ,

Love is considered to be good.

But is this true.

According to me Emotion by themselves are not good or bad.

But how we use or react to them is good or bad.

Like Ghandiji was very angry when he was thrown out of the train

In South Africa , which he used in the right way to get us freedom.

Greed of achieving something motivates us to move ahead.

Imagine if children did not fear their teachers a little or we did not fear the law

What a chaos it could be .

Similarly , love which is considered to be good in the movie DARR

Shahruk Khan because of love causes so many troubles.

So emotions by themselves are not good or bad,

But how we react to them matters

Education Is The Best Investment

Education is the best investment . It might not be always formal education.
But to keep growing and learning is very important .
Education of diverse fields help in diverse thing .
Learning how to dance and perform on stage , made me a better teacher as i could perform
in front of my students as i did on stage .
So when we study different thing , something learnt some where might just help to
solve a problem in a total unrelated field.

Never compromise on Education.
